LOS ANGELES, CA – As summer approaches, VCA Animal Hospitals, the global leader of comprehensive veterinary services and proudly part of Mars Veterinary Health, is reminding pet owners to stay vigilant when it comes to summer hazards that can affect the health and safety of their pets. From hot weather to festive celebrations and backyard gatherings, the season brings fun and increased risks for curious companions.
While enjoying sunny days and outdoor festivities, pet owners should be mindful of common hazards that can pose dangers to pets:
- Hot surfaces: Sunny days can quickly heat up patios and sidewalks. A warm 85° F can mean pavement temps of 130° F or more.
- Glow sticks and party favors: Chemical contents and small size can be harmful if chewed or swallowed.
- Corn cobs and bones: Difficult or impossible to digest and can cause internal blockages or injuries.
- Fire and fireworks: Can lead to burns, stress, or panic-induced escapes.
- Pitted or moldy fruit: Fruits like peaches or avocados contain toxic pits, while mold can cause gastrointestinal distress.
- Citronella candles and balloons: Toxic if ingested and dangerous if popped or chewed.
- Swimming pools and water access: Supervision is critical—even good swimmers can get fatigued or accidentally ingest pool chemicals.
- Avoid heatstroke: Always keep your pet’s water bowl filled and never leave pets unattended in vehicles.
